Japanese Emoticon

In Japan, we usually use emoticons called "kaomoji", literally "face mark", which can be understood without turning one's head to the left in the e-mail or web discussion forum. It's so much different from western style.
There is a bigger variety of characters that can be used in emoticons.
For example, (^_^) this is very basic style, so we usually don't use this type of things. Japanese usually tend to use much more complex ones. I'm not sure these can be displayed collectly. But it's something like this.

「 今日ディズニーランドに行きました。(V^-°)イエイ! とっても楽しかったです。(*’-’*) エヘヘ。また、行きたいです。v( ̄∇ ̄)v 」

It means " Today I went to Disneyland. :) Yay! It was very much amused. :) haha...I want to visit there again. :-P "

It is often meant to use for making the person look cuter. especially for woman. Of course Japanese young woman always use these item. But it's also usually used by senior woman. It's kinda weird though...
Well, Isn't it interesting? You can check these variety of Japanese emoticons at this site.

Sigh.

There are only 2 days left in this October.
Im a sad... Clocks should be moved back.
I dont think my English writing/speaking ability has not improved much. And I didn't take that important test this month. I haven't even studied it at all. I think im a stupid...

Well it's the end of October. So I should post some Autumn pics. It's called "cosmos".
Cute little flower with pink and red and white color that just spreads over the whole place. This is a flower that blooms only during fall.
Not from my backyard though, I took these photo in my neighbor.

KILLER STREET

Time for music. 10.05(wed) release " KILLER STREET" This is my fave band.

The Southern All Stars consists of five members. With stylish lyrics and characteristic vocals, the name "Southern All Stars" spread throughout Japan. Because of their unique performance, they were criticized as a comic band at first. However, since the third single "いとしのエリー(Itoshi no Eri)" became a big success in 1979, Southern All Stars became a band that represented Japan. Their 44th single "TSUNAMI" sold 3 million CDs and won the 42nd Japan Record Grand Prize in 2000. In 2003, the band celebrated their 25th anniversary. Southern All Stars' fanbase consists of all ages, and both genders. The band's songs cover many genres, including: love songs, ballads, social songs, and humorous songs.

Because they're so unique, I think they're not well received by foreigners... So despite of their popularity in Japan, I guess they've never been debut in the US. Anyway, it's really cool band. A new album for the first time in 7 years will be released on October 5, 2005. You can hear at this site. Check these links out!

A Glimpse Of The Future

Is it really possible of these things?
Japanese research team have predicted the earth of 50 years after.

The predict that special space elevator would be built connecting surfice with their space stations and that people would get around in vehicles that hovers just about the ground.

Joint reserch team of Tokyo University and Nomura Securities have developed computer graphic images to illustrate these ideas.
  • Space stations orbiting at 36000km would be linked to earth surface by elevator with the jarney just taking about 6 hours.
  • People would travel in linear mortor vehicle that flows over the ground. Because fully automatic, even the children can ride them alone.
  • Dog would be trained to check people's health.
  • Special cloths would be developed indicate what's going on under your skin.
  • And children would be taught by robot instead of private tutors.

Professor Masatoshi Ishikawa of Tokyo University says "We need to have a dream for the future. Something may come true or something may not. But the most important thing is to work to achieve that dream. Researchers says publishing their prediction because it's essential to have innovative ideas and reseach if sciense and technology are to develop.

I bet You probably think that these things can't be possible only in 50 years. I also doubt it. But come to think of it, 50 years ago, could really anyone imagine this present situation? Anyone predict this "World Wide Web"? So another 50 years, our sorroundings must be dramatically change again. That's for sure.

For the better? or worse. You can see what's coming sometime in the future.

選挙の日 (Japan general election, 2005)

Yesterday I went to the poll in a general election for the lower house of parliament. This was held after bills to privatise the postal system were defeated in the upper house. Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi determined to pass the bill. So this election was said to be asking for voters whether for the privatise the postal system or against it.

But this was just the strategy of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) for win this election. I think he's already had his scenario when lower house was dissolved. And results? LDP's landslide victory. Mr. Koizumi took a variety of method for apealing the voters. While Democratic party (DPJ) couldn't fully prepared for it. They were completely lost.

Actually I didn't support for LDP. Because, I'm against the policy of Prime minister's visit to the Yasukuni shrine and deployment of Japanese Self Defence Force in Iraq. So I supported for DPJ. And personal reason... Then DPJ's leader Mr. Okada was resigned the post for taking the responsibility. I think they should choose the leader who is more apeal to the voters next time. Mr. Koizumi's popularity was still absolutely great. That was proved in this election.

Last night, almost every channel was reporting about the outcome of the election. So I was watching it all night long.

A Good Hair Cut

What happened this week?
I went to have my hair cut. After looking at my own uneven long bad hair, I decided it finally. As a matter of fact, after my last bad experience,I changed the hair salon this time. Previous one was very bad. I think she was moderately "good" technically. But real problem was she didn't follow my order now and then, and she liked to cut my hair so short! I realized that this was probably not so good for my health... This time, I cut a couple inches off all around and then got layers. Well, I like it.

Then I went out for some shopping and eating with my friend. She said that she knows "good hair salon" which she's using. But it's a bit long way off from my house. And I like my hairdresser this time. Also I got the discount ticket for the next time. 1000 yen off. Well it's safety and convenient. $_$

Fiber Optic Goodness

Finally, I was connected. to the fiber-optic service! The installer showed up at around 1pm, and left about 2 hours later. I thought they took more time to install. At first, I was a bit insecure.
Because I didn't ask for any support. But I could set up it all by myself. No problem at all. And finally I got online. After many painful years of dial-up access.... I think nobody understand my feeling.
All I can say is that fiber optic broadband is amazing. Download is so much faster than previous dial up. But I realized one thing. I've been surfing the Net for hours on end. And I don't think anything! It's like watching TV. So I would become idiot in this way. Ewww... I know a lot of idiot person in this world. Especially in this Internet world. I suspect that's related to use the Internet. I've got to be careful....

Japanese' responses of meat consumption

When I read this article I was so impressed. Because, there is no such concept existing in Japan. So I decided that I ask for some opinions about this topic in the Japanese web forum that I participate in. Then whole lotta people left me comments. Actually I was slightly overwhelmed.

Total: 16 comments

I tried to translate these Japanese comments into English. But I'm not sure I could get the meaning acrossed properly... and I can't translate them all, so I picked up main responses.

(http://tokyowadoko.blogspot.com/2005/08/green-tea-frappuccinos-suck-mr-meat.html)says:
"We act as though we own these creatures. We make them our slaves. And, they cannot fight us, because we trap them. We murder them. We chop them up into little pieces. And bind those pieces together with seasoning. And eat that flesh, the blood cells, the DNA. The formerly alive chicken or cow or duck or pig or deer or fish is now a chunk of meat. Slavery is (according to dictionary.com) the state of being under the control of another person. I’d say those creatures are under the control of humans who kill them and eat them. What if we were the helpless creature…being made into chicken nuggets or hot dogs or hamburgers? So, what. They are only animals. We are carnivorous. We have teeth for meat eating. We are smarter. I guess I’m wrong. Eat more meat. Mmm meat. Meat. Meat. Mooo."

Question: What dou you think of this?

Janitor's opinion:

■It seems that vegetarian has various kinds, such as animal protection, earth environment, religion, healthy improvement, personal reason (allergy etc.). Moreover, not only a meal but the life form ( the life which does not use an animal: life which uses neither a syamisen nor a damisen nor a biwa) -- VEGAN, DIETARY VEGAN, VEGETARIAN, OVO-LACTO VEGETARIAN, LACTO VEGETARIAN, STRICT VEGETARIAN, but you can't lump them together.

What you have to be especially careful about when you're carrying out such an ideological talk with foreigners is that you have to get them understood our thought as well as we understand theirs. Although it's not related to this talk but before we can understand a minority people, it can be said that our culture which has a eating habit of whale traditionally, as a grobal minority, cannot eat a whale, either. In the vagetarian thought as it's aforementioned, there is no necessity of forcing a sense of values mutually except earth environment. Although animal protection may be to some extent influential things mutually, since this also has the difference between the culture, the thought, and the geographical conditions of each country, it can also be said that the field which must not interfere with people of foreign country at present.

"God will make people govern all the things of the ground and all the things that crawl on the ground" is written in Biblical "Book of Genesis" by the instruction of Christianity.Unlike the natural view which is living in the natural blessing country like in Japan, in the U.S., the consciousness of governing and controlling nature is high, and natural destruction and environmental conservation awareness are cried out much earlier than in Japan, and they have the history in which they have controlled nature in Europe and US. Therefore, It's true and general view that animal is being controlled as a slave (it's another story whether it's right or not to use the expression of slave) by human beings as he saids. Consequently, productive industries, such as stock raising and culture are being the main industries in Europe and the United States rather than hunting industries, such as a fishing. On the other hand, Japanese has the strong consciousness which has enjoyed a natural blessing and delicacies from the sea, and lucking consciousness against the influence on the nature by capturing the animals, so it makes them quite weak position in advanced nations. Although it has strayed from this subject to the environmental problem, not only a meal but destruction of life is needed even in Japan, and it's never praised act for Buddhism as well. However, these act are accepted as one of "the work of man" in religion, so we're eating meat.

An important thing is coexistence of a vegetarian and a non-vegetarian, and I think it's better to concentrate the talk there. Is it a thing called cultural communication?
Unfortunitely since Japan is insular country, so we are very exclusive society in terms of ideologically. Therefore, the vegetarian has not been accepted in the society, and there is no place where they can dine out in comfort.Although I think our society would become the one that concider such people. I suppose it would take more time.

Other opinions:

■I think it's contrary to the nature to say that you can eat vegetable but you can't eat animals.Even plants are living thing. It's natural to eat to live for human being. I can't help but thinking that God permit this (eating meat). So we should have the natural blessing without killing beyond necessity numbers.
■I think that you can't blame for someone to eat meat as well as you can not blame for rabbit to eat meat.
■I want you to appreciate for eating when you eat. And you should take eating as sacred thing to do. Moreover, parents should teach their children the importance of food.

etc.

After I read all the responses, I noticed the difference between men and women. Men tend to be more positive about eating meat. Contrary, women are more cautious about eating them. Like "You should think the importance of eating food more..."
Hmm... It's interesting and I'm a sooo bad translator.

Preparing for the fiber to my home

I had seriously contemplated this thing for sometime. About high-speed fiber-optic cable that has me online around-the-clock. Right now I am dialup. Service connection is so slow, takes me all-night downloads, and pay-by-the-minute dialup access. And I can't go online as much as I want.
ADSL option: It's no good cause ADSL is not available in my area. So I consider altermative options and finally dicided. Fiber-optic broadband service! Then I began looking at the service provider and service plans, which are described in detail on their sites. And finally decided.
It seems like my living place is available for that. Then signed up.

Today was hard day...Today was contractor supposed to come to my home for on-site survey to verify that the installation can be performed. So I had to make this quick! Cleaning up my whole house. First I go vaccuming my room and then first floor. Then bring some things into closet, etc... It's was really tough work. But it looks
pleasant now.
Then after that, they came to my home. It seems like existing telephone line can be used for
data transmission, and requires pulling fiber-optic cable into my house from the outside. No additional cost! I was so relieved to hear that. However, I was told that I should replace
the old phone which I am using right now, to the new type of one. That way I'll be ready for
digital phone and fiber-optic broadband with additional no cost. I can't express all this
technical things at here. It's difficult... And my service plan is all free of charge!

But It left me some problems. First off I have to meet with my building owner to receive the
necessary clearance. I wish everything would go smoothly...

Grrr....

Now, I get it. Why he didn't talk to me, why he didn't think Yon-sama as that much sexy.
The reason for the misunderstanding... The answer is so much simple. He is a gay... That's all... I found that writing on headline.
Hmmm... I cannot believe whats happening in my life. But I'm just boring now. So I would talk to him more...

Maybe it's too early

For a couple of days I explored the Internet and checked out some other blog.
I was so amazed by what I've seen there! There are huge difference between Japanese and other foreigner. Of course language is different. Other than that, maybe there's a big gap the way of thinking. But at the same time, I was so intrigued. So actually I tried attempt to speak up to two person. And one of them, who is a girl, trying to say something to me.So I thought I could get my thinking across to her. But I'm not so sure...

Now, I don't have much confidence that whether I could really get my view across...I think I get a little nervous to actually try speaking in English right now.But at the same time, I saw other Japanese girl's blog. They're also using the same Blogger.

Then I checked out their blog all the way back to the first section. And I noticed that they have'nt also received any comment about 6 months. So maybe I shouldn't get too nervous from this point. I think that's too early.I should take it easy...

Previous test results

It's already passed one month since I took usual English qualification exam. Every time I take that test I always think that I should've studied it more... Previous one was no exeption. Although this time it was fairly 'good', more than I expected. But 'essay' was so bad as I expected. In an essay, I've got to write very rationally. For example, Global warming, Ozon hole, educational issue, etc.
In the last test, it was written something like this.
●Write an essay on the given TOPIC covering three of the POINTS below.Use the space provided on your answer sheet.
●Structure: Three or more paragraphs, including an introduction and conclusion
●Length: Around 200 words
TOPIC
MAKING THE WORLD SAFER FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

POINTS
●Diplomacy●Disaster preparedness●Human rights●Nuclear disarmament●Public health
●Renewable energy

I picked out the "Disaster preparedness" and "Nuclear disarmament" and "Public health"And I wrote about natural disaster such as earthquake, and North Korea's nuclear issues and mad cow disease! I thought this question was for me. I thought it was easy. But it's not... From the outset, I'm not good at writing composition. Even Japanese. Since I was little kid. So, what shall I do? How can I improve my writing skills...?

My first post on my new blogger acount

Well... finally I made my real blog.
Actually, I've already made kinda blog. But it's not real one. I made it myself using my wildy imagination. But, I was not sure what the actual blog is. I didn't even know the definition of the 'blog'.
And at last I figure it out what that is.
Today, I got online around 1 am. And I continued to work on making this and I didn't get to finish it by this hour... I am really tired! But this is really new to me. So I am very interested in doing this...especially after seeing interesting site. I was interested in the Egyptian girl's site. I love it. I suppose this would become one of my muse.
Anyway, I shouldn't hog the computer here any more. I'm very sleepy. So I'm going to bed.
